Flames spread after home’s occupants fall asleep with unattended fireplace still burning

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Firefighters had to battle a house fire after some residents fell asleep as flames were still burning in a fireplace.

According to the Baton Rouge Fire Department, the fire happened in the 1000 block of North Acadian Thruway East around midnight. Firefighters arrived to the home to find heavy smoke coming from it and the occupants safely outside.

When crews entered the home, they located the fire in the attic. Officials say they were able to contain most of the fire to that area, but the rest of the home suffered heavy smoke and water damage…
