NEW ORLEANS — A young nurse who recently graduated from LSU remains detained at an ICE detention center in Basile, Louisiana, despite being in the middle of renewing her legal work authorization at the time of her arrest. Her case is like many others we’ve seen where people are somewhere in the middle — they have immigration paperwork or are somewhere in the middle.
Vilma Palacios has been held at the ICE detention center in Basile for nearly six months, after being arrested by immigration agents on June 26. She says the experience has been emotionally exhausting and something she would never wish on anyone.
“In here it has been a mix of emotions, a lot of ups and downs especially since the beginning I didn’t think I was going to be here for such a long time,” Palacios told us over the phone from the detention center…
