Woman’s Hospital will donate $5 million to Southern University College of Nursing and Allied Health, which university leaders say will allow the school to double its enrollment, ultimately bolstering a workforce poised to strengthen maternal and infant health.
The donation, in partnership with the Southern University System Foundation, was announced at a Board of Supervisors meeting Thursday and will be deployed over three years. Sandra Brown, vice chancellor of health initiatives and dean of the college of nursing, said the nursing program plans to expand its classrooms and laboratories with the additional funds.
Southern University Chancellor John Pierre said the state Legislature has appropriated $10 million that the university needs to match from private sources, and the Woman’s Hospital donation is a part of the match.
