I-TEAM: 16th unexpected death at Elayn Hunt in 2025 raises serious questions about state response

ST. GABRIEL, La. (WAFB) – A seventh unexpected death at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center since September is raising questions about what the state is doing to address the ongoing problem there.

Antonio Dukes, 38, died Christmas Eve from a suspected overdose at the St. Gabriel facility. His death marks the 16th unexpected death at Elayn Hunt this year alone and triggered an investigation and autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The death comes one week after Deputy Secretary of the Department of Corrections Derek Ellis sat down with the WAFB I-TEAM about what the state is doing to combat the problem. Many of the deaths are presumably from drug overdoses, but many are still awaiting autopsies…
