Baton Rouge man ruled mentally fit for trial in the fatal shooting of his 79-year-old father

It’s been more than two years since an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted Douglas Joseph Brown on second-degree murder and weapons charges tied to his father’s fatal shooting.

In that span, Brown has been ordered to the state mental hospital and declared mentally incompetent.

On Monday, prosecutors and defense lawyers concurred with doctors’ reports that Brown’s competency has been restored. Donald Johnson, the 19th Judicial District Court’s chief judge, in turn ruled that the 32-year-old Baton Rouge man is now fit to proceed to trial…
