Flamingos return to LSU Lakes ahead of Spanish Town parade

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – An iconic Mardi Gras tradition has returned in Baton Rouge.

A flock of two dozen pink flamingos landed in the LSU Lakes early Monday morning, Jan. 12. Community members flocked to the lakes to snatch them up and bring them home.

These large wooden flamingos usher in the coming of the Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade. This year’s parade takes place on Saturday, Feb. 14. It starts at noon in downtown Baton Rouge.

Pink flamingos are the parade’s mascot.

According to the parade’s website, the pink flamingo represents the saying, ”poor taste is better than no taste at all.” Organizers stated that this became somewhat of a mantra for the Spanish Town neighborhood as it grew to include more eclectic residents…
