Tank spill uphill from Louisiana Superfund site contained, company says

State regulators will send inspectors to the Clean Harbors hazardous waste complex near Baton Rouge after an accidental spill last month of about 3,200 gallons of wastewater potentially laced with low-level heavy metals, officials said.

The 186-acre complex off Scenic Highway treats, stores and ships a variety of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, including contaminated leachate liquids from landfills and other liquids, and is uphill from the Devil’s Swamp Lake Superfund site.

Workers with Clean Harbors were dismantling an open-top, above-ground storage tank and removing the tank’s sidewall on the morning of Jan. 8 when residual liquid in the heel of the tank poured out, a company spokesman said…
