LSU ousts Chancellor Steve Nelson from post atop New Orleans medical school

The chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans was removed from his position Thursday atop the 3,000-student medical school, according to an announcement from university leadership.

Steve Nelson, a physician and research leader who spent decades on faculty at LSUHSC, was named interim chancellor in 2021 and permanent chancellor in 2024. His departure was announced Thursday by LSU President Wade Rousse and the system’s chancellor, Jim Dalton, who referred to “new leadership priorities,” but didn’t elaborate as to why Nelson was let go.

“As our university moves into a new phase shaped by evolving goals, updated structures, and new leadership priorities, we have reached a point where a change in direction is appropriate,” Rousse and Dalton wrote in an email to faculty and staff…
