When the news broke that Harvest Fresh is coming to the greater Scotlandville community, many of us reacted the same way: Finally. Access to fresh, affordable food is a basic necessity that has been missing far too long.
“The BLVD at Harding,” a mixed-use development in Howell Place off Harding Boulevard, is expected to include retail, medical offices and other commercial space. The announcement of Harvest Fresh projected to open as the anchor grocery store is reason for the genuine excitement — excitement that is hard-earned. Residents should not have to drive across town and piece together groceries from corner stores. Southern University students shouldn’t have to plan long commutes just to buy fresh food.
But this moment deserves more than celebration alone; it deserves scrutiny…
