Home security cameras may store data even when offline, experts warn

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The FBI’s ability to access video from reportedly inactive Google Nest cameras during a missing person investigation has raised new questions about how much data home security companies retain.

The case involves the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, where recently released home security footage shows her possible kidnapper. The FBI said it accessed the victim’s Nest cameras even though Guthrie’s camera subscription was reportedly no longer active and the cameras were thought to be offline.

“I think it’s an invasion of privacy, it’s not viewed in a negative connotation right now, just because it’s being used to find someone that’s doing something bad, but you know, it doesn’t seem right,” said Miles McNab, a Baton Rouge resident…
