Why 5 of 6 Louisiana cities are seeing population decline in 2026

Louisiana’s population is estimated to be approximately 4.6 million people, however the state is experiencing a significant, consistent population decline.

In fact, Louisiana is one of the fastest shrinking states in the U.S., with many residents choosing to leave for a number of reasons.

While the state’s overall population is decreasing, some areas in Louisiana are seeing a slight increase or stagnation in population.

The 6 most populated cities in Louisiana according to WorldAtlas

Here are the six most populated cities in Louisiana, as of the most recent census, and whether or not their population is growing or shrinking.

1. New Orleans

New Orleans is Louisiana’s most populated city, with a population of 390,128 inside city limits. New Orleans is classified as a consolidated city-parish, meaning the city and Orleans Parish have merged and share the same boundaries, says WorldAtlas. While New Orleans draws in residents with its culture and commerce, the city is actually experiencing significant population decline, according to Quantumrun.

2. Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is the second-largest city in Louisiana, with a population of 216,701. Baton Rouge serves as the parish seat of East Baton Rouge Parish, as well as the state capital of Louisiana. This city is a major industrial center and is home to Louisiana State University. While the greater metropolitan area of Baton Rouge is experiencing population growth, the city itself is experiencing a slight decline, according to World Population Review.

3. Shreveport

The third-most populated city in Louisiana is Shreveport, with a population of 183,819. Founded in 1836, Shreveport is the parish seat of Caddo Parish. This city was once a major hub for oil, but suffered economic and population declines after the loss of this industry. Despite a stabilized economy, Shreveport is suffering a long-term population decline, partially because of high rates of crime and violence, according to WorldAtlas.

4. Metairie

Metairie is located within Jefferson Parish and has a population of 143,481. Metairie is part of the broader New Orleans metropolitan area and is experiencing a slight increase in population growth, while other data points to a stagnating population. Residents may be attracted to Metairie because of its suburban comforts and urban convenience.

5. Lafayette

Lafayette has a population of 124,561 and serves as the parish seat of Lafayette Parish, as well as the home of University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The city of Lafayette, and it’s surrounding metro area, has seen a somewhat steady growth in population, according to USAFacts. Lafayette’s population increase could be driven by its rich cultural scene and an affordable cost of living.

6. Lake Charles

Lake Charles has a population of 80,169 and is the parish seat of Calcasieu Parish. Last year, Lake Charles’ metropolitan area was named the biggest boomtown in Louisiana because of exponential job growth. However, despite this population boom, the population within the city itself, not the broader metro area, has seen a slight decline, according to World Population Review…
