Inside look: Opening soon, this Baton Rouge restaurant has an award-winning grilled cheese

With its grand opening in April, Southdowns Grille in Baton Rouge has garnered attention after winning an award at the Epicurean Society’s annual Crawfête event this month.

Its opening follows the closure of Solera, a tapas restaurant at 4205 Perkins Road that opened in 2019 and closed on Feb. 1. The same management team is replacing it with Southdowns Grille, opening on April 14, the week after Easter, according to owner Brian Dykes.

On March 22, Southdowns Grille landed first place for best culinary dish at Crawfête. This year’s festival sold out to over 700 guests, and chef Darren Jaime at Southdowns Grille crafted a crawfish grilled cheese that won over the taste buds of judges.

“It’s very exciting to know that Baton Rouge gave us the support that we need opening,” Dykes said. “I think I have a great culinary team. They do a great job, and I think people are going to really be impressed with the food and the menu.”…
