Funding options explored for new Mississippi River Bridge in Plaquemine

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The saga into the new Mississippi River Bridge South, set to connect Plaquemine and St. Gabriel, continues.

On Monday, the Capital Area Road and Bridge District met to explore options concerning paying for the bridge. The six commissioners heard from a financial advisor about the different options to fund the new bridge, from using all tax revenue to enacting tolls, which is currently in use on the Calcasieu River Bridge. They have the option to use several different sources of income.

After the presentation, District Chairman Jay Campbell said, “You’ve given us a tremendous amount of information that’s going to have to be digested by all the commissioners.”

No action was taken at this meeting. The district reiterated that they are a taxing agency that determines how to pay for projects such as bridges and roads, and does not decide where the bridge will be or what it will look like.
