Man accused in Madison Brooks rape seeks reinstatement of judge removed from case over texts

One of the men accused of raping LSU sophomore Madison Brooks is seeking reinstatement of the judge who was removed from the case because of texts suggesting a friendship with the defendant’s family.

The ruling comes about three years after Brooks died following a night of heavy drinking in Tigerland. She was allegedly raped in a vehicle before being dropped off in a subdivision and fatally hit by a car.

Judge Gail Horne Ray, who had presided over the case for nearly three years, was recused by another Baton Rouge judge in November 2025 to “safeguard public confidence” in the judicial process of Brooks’ case…
