“It was a dream just burning down” | One year since devastating Nottoway Plantation fire

WHITE CASTLE — A 160-year-old Iberville Parish landmark, reduced to rubble in a matter of hours. Today, exactly one year later, there is still no word on what caused the devastating fire that ripped through Nottoway Plantation, the largest surviving antebellum plantation home in the U.S.

The plantation was converted into a bed and breakfast in 1980, hosting visitors, events, and weddings. The owners, Dan and Desiree Dyess, had only bought the plantation seven months before the fire.

In an instant, the Dyesses watched their plans for the bed and breakfast go up in smoke. “It was devastating. It was a dream that was just burning down,” Dan told UWK
