Suspect in former Comeaux High school student murder case seeks early release

BATON ROUGE, La. (KLFY) — More than six years after the killing of Lafayette teen Matthew Carter shocked the Acadiana community, one of the suspects in the case appeared at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse in Baton Rouge for a hearing connected to his request for an early release from juvenile custody.

Rendavian Warren, who was 13 years old at the time of the shooting, is currently serving a juvenile life sentence that is scheduled to end in April 2027, when he turns 21. Warren is now seeking to be released from custody roughly a year early through a petition filed with the court.

The hearing stems from the January 2020 shooting death of Matthew Carter, a senior at Comeaux High School whose killing drew widespread attention across Acadiana. Investigators said Carter was sitting in the driver’s seat of his Camaro on North Meyers Drive in Lafayette when two juveniles, ages 13 and 14 at the time, attempted to rob him.
