PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The University of Washington School of Medicine is holding a clinical trial to study whether a drug can help treat alcohol addiction for people facing moderate to severe alcohol-use disorder.
Researchers are studying brenipatide, a new GLP-1/GIP drug that’s also being studied in other clinical trials in the United States. While GLP-1 medications are known to regulate blood sugar, researchers are aiming to have a better understanding of the drug’s potential to treat alcohol, opioid and nicotine addiction, along with bipolar disorder and cardiometabolic diseases.
“These are people whose alcohol use is, in many cases, impacting multiple areas of their life, like health, relationships or work. They may continue to use alcohol, experience cravings, and have tried many times to stop or cut down,” said Mary Hatch, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at UW Medicine.
