Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson addressed a crowd last week to reveal that her administration would not be able to install 500 shelter beds in the city before the FIFA World Cup, failing to achieve a goal they had set earlier.
She still has time to accomplish her goal to install 1,000 such beds before the end of 2026, but revealed that the initial promise of 500 beds won’t be possible. “No, we’re not going to make 500 [shelter beds] by FIFA,” Wilson said to a crowd at a Seattle CityClub event Wednesday, moderated by Fox13’s Hana Kim.
“We’re still working toward it,” she said about the larger goal for 1,000 beds. During the same meeting, she admitted to breaking her boycott of Starbucks coffee.

The goal of 500 beds comes from Wilson’s campaign last year to add 4,000 shelter beds over her term as mayor. She initially said this would be “an ongoing effort throughout this four-year term” ending with the ultimate goal of 4,000 beds…
