West Seattle QFC Guard Kicked, Cut Stopping $109 Shoplifter Who Turned Violent

A security guard at the Junction QFC in West Seattle was actively bleeding when Seattle police officers arrived Wednesday night, after a routine shoplifting stop turned into a violent struggle that left the guard cut by shattered glass and kicked in the groin. The Seattle Fire Department treated the guard on scene, while the 44-year-old suspect he had detained was booked into jail on suspicion of robbery.

According to West Seattle Blog, the incident unfolded on August 19 at the QFC located at 4550 42nd Ave SW, when a uniformed and armed security guard confronted a man who had placed store merchandise into a bag without paying. Per the police report cited by the outlet, the guard told the man he needed to either leave the unpaid items behind or complete the purchase before exiting. The man instead claimed he owned the store and gave a name that, when checked, matched no records at all.

Seattle Police Officer 2-William-11 was dispatched to the store to investigate a reported robbery, per the police report. By the time officers arrived, the confrontation had already turned physical. The guard grabbed the suspect’s bag, and in the struggle that followed, the bag split open and unpaid merchandise spilled across the floor, valued at $109.41 according to the police report.

Threats, a Kick, and Shattered Glass

The same police report indicates the suspect threatened to kill the guard between five and six times during the altercation and at one point kicked him in the groin. A glass item shattered on the store floor during the struggle, and the guard cut one finger on the broken glass.
