‘Red Gold’: Thurston County family farm among the first in Western Washington to grow saffron

A small family farm 25 minutes outside of downtown Olympia is aiming to become one of the first saffron producers in Western Washington.

Emily Strand of Aurum Hill Farm finished planting her first 20,000 corms of crocus, the flower saffron comes from, in late August.

Those bulbs will bloom into purple flowers later this fall…
