As part of the settlement, the city ‘admits no wrongdoing in the case’
The City of Seattle has settled a lawsuit for $10 million with more than 50 protesters who sued after clashes with police during demonstrations in 2020 over the murder of George Floyd .
Floyd, an unarmed Black man, died after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin , who is white, knelt on his neck for 9 1/2 minutes. The incident was captured on video, and Floyd could be heard saying, “I can’t breathe.”
His death sparked global Black Lives Matter protests, including in Seattle.
On Thursday, the City of Seattle announced in a news release that it had settled a lawsuit related to protesters who alleged they were injured by police using excessive force during demonstrations.
“This decision was the best financial decision for the City considering risk, cost, and insurance,” City Attorney Ann Davison said in the release. “The case has been a significant drain on the time and resources of the City and would have continued to be so through an estimated three-month trial that was scheduled to begin in May.”
