Washington State is slated to get $1.25 million in federal grants to memorialize historic LGBTQ+ sites in Seattle, the office of the Washington Governor’s office has announced.
The Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation will receive $75,000 for protecting LGBTQIA2S+ history around the Puget Sound, the Governor’s office announced further.
“The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation has been fortunate to receive funding from the National Park Service to identify and honor historic places in Washington that represent the stories of diverse and marginalized communities,” said DAHP director Allyson Brooks. “Over the last decade, our work with these groups has created strong partnerships. Together we’ve been able to highlight the previously untold histories of so many important places.”
The project will complement DAHP’s review of historical LGBTQ+ sites in Seattle in collaboration with the state’s LGBTQ Commission, according to the Governor’s Office.
In 2022, DAHP was awarded $100,000 by NPS for a campaign to map historic places for Washington’s Black and Chinese American communities, the Governor’s Office reports.
