Washington State DOT warns drivers about ‘Monster Weekend’ road closures

Transportation officials in Washington State are warning drivers about the “biggest closures” of the year coming to major travel corridors in the Seattle area this weekend.

Officials recently issued an advisory for a set of road closures they’ve dubbed “Monster Weekend” — “the biggest weekend of Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) construction closures for the region this year.”

The road closures are set to begin late Friday, September 27 and last through early Monday, September 30, on State Route 520, through the I-405/SR 167 corridors, and on I-5 in Seattle and between Federal Way and Tacoma.

WSDOT says that the road closures will form a “monster” traveler challenge and drivers are advised that detour routes will not be able to accommodate normal traffic volumes. Drivers are asked to choose off-peak hours for travel or to delay non-essential travel until the road closures are lifted.

See below for more details from WSDOT on each closure.

SR 520 closure

The SR 520 closure stretches from I-5 in Seattle to 92nd Avenue Northeast in Clyde Hill on the Eastside and include all of the associated on- and off-ramps. The SR 520 Trail will also close for bicyclists and pedestrians across the lake. The highway and trail will close at 11 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. Part of the SR 520 Montlake Project , crews will work on lighting and the fire suppression system under the new Montlake lid over SR 520.
