The Seattle “Spite House” is Back on the Market and It’s Still Petty as Ever

As cordial as we all would like to be, we’ve probably been spiteful at some point. Perhaps someone in your house keeps eating your favorite snack, and to pay them back, you place sliced cucumbers in the potato chip bag to teach them a lesson. Okay. So, you occasionally have a petty streak in you, but would you go so far as to build an entire house and get revenge on the culprit? Well, someone did a long time ago, and now this awkward structure is selling in Seattle for almost a million dollars. This certainly is a revenge plot that keeps giving high returns year over year!

The infamous ‘ Montlake Spite House ‘ is a wedge-shaped home built in Seattle, Washington, in 1925. Rumor has it that the woman who originally built this home did so as an act of revenge toward her ex-husband, protesting the divorce settlement. She was awarded a 3,090 square foot parcel of their shared property. She was so annoyed by this that she responded by building a wedge-shaped house on the property to block his view.

A few variations of the story have now become legend in Seattle. Whatever history is attached to this property, this petty act of revenge hasn’t stopped buyers from purchasing it. Nor has the price of the house suffered. In 1983, this house sold for $50,000. Since then, it has sold quite a few times. Now, it’s back on the market for a whopping $799,000!…
