The City of Bellevue has been named the 2025 Frank Chopp Public Sector Champion for its commitment to affordable housing, according to the Housing Development Consortium of Seattle-King County. This accolade comes as recognition of Bellevue’s efforts to address the housing affordability crisis, showcasing the city’s dedicated Office of Housing and comprehensive strategies for creating more affordable living spaces.
Bianca Siegl, director of the Office of Housing in Bellevue, highlighted the city’s focus on affordable housing amidst its growth. In a statement obtained by bellevuewa.gov, she expressed gratitude for the recognition of their work and the legacy of Frank Chopp, a known housing advocate. “Bellevue is a growing community, and we and our partners are focused on expanding opportunities for everyone to have a safe and stable home they can afford,” Siegl said.
The city’s recent Comprehensive Plan update captures Bellevue’s intention to build up to 35,000 homes in the next 20 years, prioritizing transit-oriented areas and anti-displacement policies. Bellevue’s City Council shows its commitment through a revised Affordable Housing Strategy, which aims to facilitate 5,700 new or preserved affordable homes in the forthcoming decade, a 128% increase from its previous objective, which was surpassed ahead of schedule.
