SEA Airport’s role as international gateway expands with new direct flights

SEATAC, Wash. — Beginning Monday, Alaska Airlines will join three of its competitors in offering nonstop flights from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Tokyo, Japan — a milestone that further cements Seattle’s growing role as a major international gateway.

Just two years ago, only 25 airlines operated international routes from SEA Airport. By the end of 2025, that number will rise to 36 — a rapid expansion timed ahead of Seattle’s role as a host city in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
