Severe geomagnetic storm could bring northern lights to Pacific Northwest

SEATTLE — A powerful solar eruption could trigger a severe geomagnetic storm early next week, giving the Pacific Northwest a good shot at seeing Northern Lights.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm watch for Sunday night into Monday, after a strong coronal mass ejection erupted from the sun Friday evening. The burst of solar plasma is expected to reach Earth late Sunday.
