King County transit faces security risks as guards threaten strike over wage dispute

SEATTLE — Stalled contract talks between private security officers and their employers could create new safety risks throughout the public transit system in King County.

Nearly 5,000 members with SEIU6 voted last week to authorize a strike unless their wage demands are met. Their labor agreement expired last month, and the companies that hired them came back with a 30-cent wage increase.

“A 30-cent raise doesn’t do it, and so we’re going to continue to fight for an increase that allows our members to thrive in this economy,” said Greg Ramirez, the deputy director at SEIU6 and the chief spokesperson for the bargaining team. “The theme from our membership is dollars, not cents.”…
