Seattle coffee shops see opportunity as Starbucks closes local stores

SEATTLE — Seattle coffee shops are hoping to cash in as Starbucks shutters several local locations. The Seattle-born company said it plans to close about 1 percent of its U.S. cafés, while remodeling a thousand others to boost business next year.

At City Grind Espresso, owner Jon Streeter has been brewing in the city for three decades. He said Starbucks closures could help smaller cafés attract new customers.

“We were outside and right across the street from that one back in the ’90s,” Streeter said. “It would have been super handy if they closed then.”…
