Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is continuing to support students and families during the ongoing federal budget impasse and recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As of late October 2025, the federal government has not approved a budget. This has raised concerns about school meal programs and food security for families in Seattle.
SPS is providing free breakfast and lunch to all students. Some schools offer up to three meals each day. Families who are unsure about their eligibility for free or reduced-price meals can complete forms or visit the district website for information. Most children who receive SNAP benefits also qualify for these school meal programs.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has approved $4 million per month in food assistance starting November 1, 2025. This funding will help city-contracted food banks through the end of the year or until SNAP benefits are restored.
