State payroll tax would force jobs out of Washington, say business leaders, Bellevue Mayor

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Bellevue’s Mayor acknowledges Seattle tax policy has benefitted her city and should serve as a warning sign for Washington lawmakers who dare consider a new statewide payroll tax.

“This would be detrimental to everybody, I think,” said Lynne Robinson on Tuesday, just 24 hours after State Representative Shaun Scott unveiled a bill, modeled after Seattle’s Jumpstart Tax, to tax large businesses 5% for employees making more than $125,000 a year.

Scott says it would generate up to $3 billion dollars a year and offset federal funding cuts on issues like housing, health care, and higher education…
