By the time Winter reached high school, she had already lived through more upheaval than many experience in a lifetime.
Winter entered Washington’s foster care system at age 3, separated from her sisters and placed in three different foster homes over the course of her childhood. First, in elementary school, again in middle school, and a third time as a teenager. Each move brought new disruptions and left scars she still works through today.
“When I was a child, I definitely suffered through depression,” Winter said. “It would be hard for me when I was younger to get out of bed in the morning. It would be hard for me to eat.”…
