As the new year unfolds, the Lynnwood WA Police Department is offering local residents, particularly women, a chance to embrace a self-defense mindset with their FREE Women Empowered classes. According to a recent social media post from the department, the classes are designed to introduce women to self-defense and jiu jitsu in an environment that is both fun and safe, welcoming participants regardless of their previous experience.
The upcoming schedule kicks off on January 10, 2026, featuring a two-hour session from 1 to 3 pm that covers the Elbow Escape technique and Guillotine Choke Defense from a guard position. Other classes, slated to take place every two weeks, will include Rear Choke Defenses, Bear Hug Defenses, Hair Grab Defenses, and various Weapon Defenses. As noted on the department’s Facebook page, the program is spread across 15 lessons encompassing 20 techniques that address the four phases of an assault, whether by a stranger or someone known to the victim. The classes are structured so they can be taken in any sequence.
Open to individuals aged 12 and older, the self-defense classes require that minors be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants are encouraged to don fitness or workout attire suitable for the physical activity involved. In order to secure a spot in these sought-after sessions, pre-registration is essential.
