Emergency blood shortage prompts ‘Code Red’ alert in Northwest

SEATTLE — A sharp decline in blood donations has prompted Bloodworks Northwest to declare a “Code Red,” warning of a severe blood shortage across Western Washington and Oregon.

Bloodworks said less than half of the donations needed to supply local hospitals are currently being collected. The organization is urging people to schedule immediate appointments to donate blood, with a particular need for Type O blood and platelets.

Hospitals rely on a steady blood supply for emergencies, surgeries, and lifesaving treatments, but current levels are critically low, according to Bloodworks. More than 29,700 donation appointment slots remain open through the end of January…
