Future of Seattle’s Gas Works Park up in the air after falling deaths, safety concerns

SEATTLE — The future of Seattle’s iconic Gas Works Park could be decided this week as city officials consider whether to remove climbable features from the park’s historic industrial structures, a move supporters say is necessary for safety, but critics argue would fundamentally alter the landmark.

The Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board is scheduled to meet on Wednesday afternoon to review a proposal from Seattle Parks and Recreation that would remove ladders, stairs, platforms, and other elements that allow people to climb the former gasification plant towers overlooking Lake Union.
