Bellevue Transit Killer’s Sentencing Put On Ice After Tearful Courtroom Meltdown

A routine sentencing hearing in King County Superior Court came to an abrupt halt Friday when 28-year-old Gabriel Vargas-Garcia broke down in tears and could not continue. The judge called a roughly 15-minute recess, then ultimately pushed the hearing to next Tuesday. Vargas-Garcia is awaiting sentencing in the 2022 attack at the Bellevue Transit Center that left a man in a wheelchair dead.

The emotional spiral started while Vargas-Garcia’s attorney was speaking to the court, and the judge eventually decided to postpone the proceeding, according to KOMO. Vargas-Garcia pleaded guilty in January to second-degree murder and two counts of malicious mischief, and prosecutors are asking for a 22-year prison term followed by three years of community custody.

Attack Captured on Transit Center Cameras

Investigators say the July 2022 attack was random and was caught on cameras at the Bellevue Transit Center that show Vargas-Garcia striking and then repeatedly kicking the man as he sat in his wheelchair, according to Bellevue Reporter. The victim, 63-year-old Eric Troy Larson, died days later.

Charging documents and video reviewed by investigators show the assailant lifting Larson’s head and smashing it onto the sidewalk, as reported by KIRO. Prosecutors also noted that Vargas-Garcia had been released from custody only about a day before the assault, a detail that drew scrutiny during early coverage of the case.

Family Members Speak in Court

Inside the courtroom Friday, family members of Larson delivered their statements and described Vargas-Garcia as “a menace to society who should not be let out.” As they spoke and his attorney addressed the judge, Vargas-Garcia began sobbing, prompting the 15-minute recess and, ultimately, the postponement of sentencing, according to KOMO. The judge said the hearing would resume next Tuesday, with final arguments and additional victim impact statements expected before a sentence is handed down.
