Massive, century-old redwood cut down in Seattle neighborhood after federal permit issued

SEATTLE — A century-old redwood in Seattle’s Madison Park neighborhood was cut down Friday, despite weeks of protests from neighbors who said bald eagles had been using the towering tree as a roost.

The roughly 100-foot-tall redwood stood on private property along McGilvra Boulevard East, part of a grove of six mature redwoods and other trees on a 17,000-square-foot lot designated by the city as an Environmentally Critical Area. The property owner received city approval to remove the tree to make way for a retaining wall ahead of plans to build a new home.

Last month, a tree-cutting crew hired by the owner delayed the removal after two bald eagles flew in and perched in the tree’s upper branches as workers prepared their equipment…
