Kelsey Creek Park’s Sheep-Shearing Tradition Returns

Kelsey Creek Park is hosting on April 25 a sheep-shearing celebration that, in addition to its title activity, will have spinning demonstrations, pony- and wagon-pulled rides, kids’ activities, and more.

The event dates back in the early 1990s, when ever-increasing crowds came to the Bellevue park each spring to watch sheep get their winter coats trimmed off. The event offers a glimpse into Bellevue’s agrarian past with the setting’s protected historic barns, animals, fish-spawning habitat, and open space, a release noted.

Sheep shearers will explain to onlookers, from wool to yarn, how sheep’s coats can become sweaters as well as fun facts about the traditional farming practice, such as how sheep can produce between six and 10 pounds of wool every year…
