Snow hits western Washington and schools shut down

Western Washington residents woke up to an unwelcome surprise Today, March 13. Snow flurries moved through several neighborhoods in the early morning hours, and by the time most families were checking their phones, a growing list of school districts had already made their calls.

The Snoqualmie Valley School District and the Tahoma School District both announced full closures for Friday. Several other districts across the region opted for delayed start times as conditions on the roads remained uncertain through the morning.

What the weather looks like

The FOX 13 Weather Team designated Friday a Weather Alert Day for the region. Snow began showing up as a wintry mix across parts of the North Sound on Thursday night before transitioning into flurries in neighborhoods throughout western Washington by morning. Viewer photos from Federal Way captured a light but visible accumulation on the ground.

The good news for commuters and families is that the snow is not expected to stick around. Forecasters say a dusting of light snow should melt quickly and give way to rain, particularly in areas south of the region. The window of disruption appears short, but it was wide enough to push school administrators into action before the school day began.
