Shelby County Sheriff’s Office adds first electronic storage detection K-9, Onyx

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has added a new tool to help investigators find hidden digital evidence in child exploitation cases: its first Electronic Storage Detection K9.

The agency welcomed ESD K9 “Onyx” on May 15, 2026, in Columbiana. Onyx began his tour of duty the same day and is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division’s Investigator Bulgrin.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said Onyx is trained and sponsored by the United States Secret Service National Computer Forensic Institute. The dog is trained to locate hidden electronics that offenders commonly conceal to hide Child Sexual Abuse Material evidence…
