“They didn’t follow the law”: Juror explains verdict in Riverchase drowning case

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — Nearly three years after 18-year-old Reginald Adams drowned at Riverchase Country Club, a federal jury has concluded the facility failed to follow required pool safety regulations — a finding one juror hopes serves as a warning to other facilities and a reminder about the importance of water safety.

The case centered on whether Riverchase Country Club complied with safety requirements designed to protect swimmers. Jurors ultimately found the club’s operator failed to meet those requirements before Adams’ drowning death in August 2023.

One juror who spoke with ABC 33/40 said the exact cause of the drowning remained unknown. The juror said evidence presented during the trial showed that Adams went down a water slide into a 12-foot-deep pool and never resurfaced.
