BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – THE NEXT 24 HOURS: This morning is mainly cloudy with temperatures holding in the low and mid 70s. Expect periods of rain and storms at times rather than an all-day washout, but any storm that develops can bring dangerous lightning and brief heavy downpours. A few storms could also produce localized gusty winds, which may knock down small limbs or blow around loose outdoor items. If you hear thunder, go indoors and wait it out.
The main concern this afternoon will come from localized flooding. If you live in a floodplain, this is your First Alert to plan.
THE NEXT BIG THING: The main reason the coverage of rain stays elevated is a stubborn, slow-moving area of low pressure that has very little movement. That means we’ll continue to see greater coverage of showers and thunderstorms through Wednesday. By Thursday, the stronger forcing eases, and we transition back to a more familiar summertime routine. Storms will mainly pop up during the hottest part of the day and fade after sunset, with more breaks of dry weather in between.
Looking ahead to the weekend, we will be heading back into a typical summertime pattern for Alabama. Data suggests a stronger ridge of high pressure may build in, which would mean fewer storms and hotter afternoons with highs back into the low to mid-90s.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: The 2026 FIFA World Cup is airing on FOX. If a match runs into our regular newscast, you can still catch us on the WBRC streaming app, the WBRC First Alert Weather app, WBRC’s Facebook page and the livestream on the WBRC website.
Have a great Sunday!…
