Sign of the times: Birmingham’s first department store to become historic living space

Developers are in the process of restoring the historic downtown building that was once home to Birmingham’s first department store and on Tuesday they got city approval on their proposed street sign, a throwback to the original.

The Yeilding’s Department Store building, at the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 22nd Street, is undergoing a $9.4 million renovation that will turn it into 40 studio apartments with commercial space on the ground floor that could house a restaurant.
