Chelsea accepts SCSO contract, plans for future police department

The Chelsea City Council discussed its plans for a possible police department and the current law enforcement contract with Shelby County at a work session on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Chelsea will sign a new contract with Shelby County for law enforcement support from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office through October 2029 after several discussions and revisions. The new contract contains two distinct changes.

According to the contract, if the SCSO is sued for an incident within the city of Chelsea, then the city would be required to cover any additional expenses that the county’s insurance would not cover. Previously, Chelsea would have been required to cover any expenses accrued…
