Oscar nominee Colman Domingo to play pianist Nat King Cole, who was brutally attacked during Birmingham show in 1956

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Fresh off his Oscar-nominated performance as civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the biopic “Rustin,” Colman Domingo is now getting ready to play a famed entertainer with Alabama roots.

Colman Domingo, who is nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, is now set to both play and direct a movie on the life of Nat King Cole, a singer and pianist who was born in Montgomery. The news was first reported by Variety Thursday.

“I’ve been working on it quietly for a few years,” Domingo said during a Variety Awards Circuit Podcast episode . “It’s something I’m looking forward to putting together with some great partners.”

Although Cole was born in Alabama, he and his family moved to Chicago when he was 4, growing up and living there until he dropped out of high school at 15 and hit the road as a musician.
