Jefferson County Coroner’s Office searching for families of 2 people who died

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Jefferson County Coroner and Medical Examiner’s Office announced it is requesting assistance locating the family of two people who died in January.

Gary Lee Cook

On Jan. 20, Gary Cook, 66, was pronounced dead from natural causes around 9:04 a.m. in the 1400 block of Montclair Road. He previously lived in the 2200 block of Morris Majestic Road in Morris and in the 400 block of Dean Drive in Gardendale. Cook’s personal records list no emergency or family contacts. Cook was a tenant of Fair Haven Nursing Home and a patient at UAB Hospital at the time of his death.

He may be from Maryland and have distant family in Idaho, Texas, Louisiana and Wisconsin.

Billie Ruth Watkins

On Jan. 26, Billie Watkins, 83, died from natural causes in the 700 block of Mary Vann Lane. She was pronounced dead at 9:59 a.m. At the time of her death, she was a resident at Birmingham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center East and under the care of Affinity Hospice. According to a friend, Watkins has no known living family. She previously listed an address in the 700 block of Jackson Boulevard in Tarrant.
