Man found unresponsive at Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, dies at UAB hospital

BESSEMER, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A man being held in the Jefferson County Jail – Bessemer Division is dead after being found unresponsive on Monday.

At 7:39 a.m., 51-year-old Brandon Wayne Parrish was witnessed to become unresponsive “from an apparent medical issue,” according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Parrish was transported to UAB Medical West Hospital in Bessemer, where he was pronounced dead at 8:27 a.m.

Parrish had been charged with domestic violence in the second degree – burglary in the third degree; violation of domestic violence protection order; domestic violence in the third degree – criminal mischief in the third degree; and domestic violence in the third degree – harassment of family.

Parrish was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on March 29, 2023. He had bonded out on his first three charges.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday to determine the cause and manner of death.
