2 people stopped by Homewood police after mistakenly being identified as suspects in domestic case

HOMEWOOD, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Two people were mistakenly detained by police following reports of a potential domestic scene Sunday, the Homewood Police Department reports.

According to HPD, authorities were notified that an elderly man had threatened to come to a family member’s house in the 500 block of Edgecrest Drive and shoot them.

Authorities say they arrived and saw an elderly man with a vehicle that matched the description provided to officers. Police then detained the man and his female passenger, but released both of them after it was determined they were not the subject officers were looking for.

Sgt. John Carr, spokesperson for the HPD, said the stop was not a wrongful detention and that they had probable cause to stop a person in a similar car to the suspect’s, as well as being located near the house where the report was made, before something could have happened.

“We certainly understand that the family might be upset, and we respect that, but we had to stop it,” Carr said.
