Birmingham Zoo opossum creates confusion, sees shadow on Groundhog Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Birmingham Zoo held its annual Groundhog Day celebration Friday with its 1-year-old opossum predicting whether or not spring will come early.

The Birmingham Zoo announced Tuesday that Pinto, a Virginia opossum nicknamed “Birmingham Jill” would take over the task of looking for her shadow. The decision was made because Birmingham Bill, the zoo’s groundhog, was still in hibernation.

After the announcement came Friday morning that Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow, and therefore Americans could expect an early spring, Birmingham Jill did the unthinkable.

Pinto saw her shadow at 11 a.m., predicting six more weeks of winter.
