Dead tree that could ‘fall any minute’ removed in Midfield neighborhood

MIDFIELD, Ala. ( WIAT ) — William Keasler used to fear for his life as he passed the intersection of Collier Drive and Karen Street.

“It could kill somebody,” Keasler said of a rotting tree in his neighborhood in Midfield. “50-foot-high or 40-foot-high rotten tree, obviously people know it’s rotten. If you know something’s rotten you get rid of something no matter who’s responsible for it.”

Keasler then contacted CBS 42’s “Your Voice, Your Station” hotline to bring awareness to it.

“It could fall just at any minute,” Keasler said. “I was concerned with my own safety plus the safety of my own neighbors, too.”

However, the responsibility of who could cut down the tree stumped many in the city.

After CBS 42’s request, Midfield Mayor Gary Richardson said he gave the address to his public works department and went to see it for himself. He said he had never heard about it had been brought to his attention by the station.

“The tree was really about to fall, and it was rotten to the core,” he said. “We heard reports that children were actually going near the tree and pushing it. We were afraid it would cause some kind of hazard.”
